I live alone as well and am totally blind, but there may be a way to minimize problems with dropped broken glass if we use those plastic shopping bags to put around the glass items when in use. So long as all of the broken glass ends up in the bag and so long as the bag doesn't tear if a person is careful after a drop has happened it may just be a matter of finding the top of the bag, closing it up and removing it to the trash.
