I, too, thought this was an odd question. I haven't read all the responses so I don't know if somebody has already said this, but here goes. It seems obvious to me that a blind person should know how to cook because a blind person has to eat. There probably will come a time for most of us when we have to live alone. If you can't drive, you can't always get out to get stuff. So you'd better have stuff on hand and know how to make something for yourself. and also if you're competent in the kitchen, you can save money. You can usually make things from scratch for less money than it costs to buy them ready made. You also avoid having to throw things out. For example, I once bought a cantaloupe. My shopping assistant said she would come when it was riper and cut it for me. Well, after several days, I realized that if it didn't get cut that day, it would have to be thrown out. So I did it myself and have been doing it ever since. as others have said, cooking is fun, rewarding and gives a great sense of satisfaction and pride. Ellen

Subject: [CnD] OT: General question about cooking and visual impairment

Dear list,

I am currently taking classes to become a TVI and have a project
involving cooking.

I would like to ask you guys about why you feel it is an important
skill for a blind/visually impaired student (or adult) to know how to
cook and other kitchen skills.

Thanks
Denise
