That is a very good way to do it.
For other hot water uses, I have a gadget I got from BlindMiceMart.com that 
beeps when water reaches the level of the contacts. It's designed to alert you 
so you don't overflow your container and spill hot water everywhere. I call it 
a Tell-Tell, I'm not sure what its actually called. I use it all the time to 
make hot tea, or fill coffee cups.
