You honestly cannot mess up any thing like that! all that can happen is that
it tastes richer, more like the real McCoy, so for the first time, do as you
are told, and thereafter, experiment; the more milk and butter you add, the
creamier and better they will taste; I also like to add dehydrated onion to
them. first soak in water to hydrate. 
If you do not want to do that step, then put the onion flakes in the boiling
water, then follow with the rest of instructions.

Gennerally I would follow the directions.  The packages of instant mashed
potatos aren't that expensive so you may wan to try half a coup of milk a
quarter cup of butter and a cup of water.  The potatos may come out creamier
but the experiment may be worth it.
