For a change, every now and than I like to cook some barley flakes. The taste is richer than oatmeal and in my opinion, just as good if not better.For two servings in this family.
1 cup of water, brought to a boil.
Stir in a half cup of barley and give it a stir and bring water back to a boil
Turn to a low simmer and cover and let cook for twenty minutes.
You can add a pinch of salt  (optional)
The last 5 minutes add your fruit you like in your cereal.
