This is a matter of preference. I use real butter in my sweet potato pies and vanilla or almond exract. I like to measure in cinnamon and nutmeg and not use pumpkin spice because I don't like the ginger and cloves in my sweet potato. Also make sure to use actuall sweet potatoes and not yams. It makes a difference.
