The standard wisdom is that the bigger the onion the milder it is. The darker it is the sweeter it is, so purple are sweeter than red, which are sweeter than yellow and white. That said, the "Ten-Fifteen" onion, a breed of onion developed by Texas A&M and one that has multiple growing seasons, that last one ending in mid October, (hence the name) is a relatively sweet onion too even though it's a white onion.
