Red seems a bit sweeter than purple, although I'm told by those in the produce business that they are essentially the same. I do use them interchangeably, whichever looks the best at the time. I don't buy the brown onions, anymore, because they are a bit strong. There are tiny onions that are white, and they are sweet. I think they're called Hawaiian onions. They come in a mesh bag. I like to use those in stew. I'm not too keen on pearl onions, which are really small.
