If you can't do the pop over crust, and you have barley that likely will work better in stew than rice. The pop over idea comes from our European ancestors. Mince Meat pies and other similar items like Welsh Oggies come out like this too. Senegal has its fetaias (I hope I didn't murder the spelling).

Now this sounds yummy! I never thought of the popover crust and I never
thought of cabbage. I like it!

Cabbage works well, and it survives well. If the stew pieces are cut small
enough before cooking, why not make it portable and wrap it in pop over crusts?

I like to put root vegetables.
beets, turnips, potatoes.
For seasoning cumin, and paprika are nice additions.
Many people I know love to add cheese.
