A microwave bacon tray isn't mandatory, but it helps a lot and also means not going through a lot of paper towels or napkins. It takes between 3.5-4 minutes in my microwave, and this is ordinary bacon, not the more expensive kind. If you wind up with precooked bacon it's about fifteen seconds to get hot and a minute to get really crispy.
