It is not about 'alienating', it is about same policy should apply to everyone. If some people start feeling 'alienated' and 'offended' when treated like everyone else, well, it is 'their' problems (yes, it is the moment 'we' and 'them' start to emerge). Again, though, that may be a different issue in scope than the issue that was initially raised.
