It is probably not what you are used to, if you've come from other graphics programs. However, it makes sense - the stuff you are centered on and looking at (i.e. at the centre of the rotation plane) is brightest.

Most users, once they are used to it, seem to prefer this to the traditional approach of having bright stuff at the front obscuring the things you really want to see. Try it for a while and see what you think.
This looks inconsistent to me:
If the center is the brightes, why do you not rotate around a point in this plane. We often got sidechains out of the front of the screen during adjustment, if I scale up to fit it into the density.
