We do rotate about a point in the brightest plane. However that plane is positioned at 7/10 of the viewing box depth from the back.

I'm not sure what you mean here. Are you using stereo? There will be a certain amount obscuring of the rotation centre by object in front (and that, generally is a good thing). To remove that completely, we would have to move the rotation axis onto the front clipping plane. I don't think that that's a good idea.

At some stage I intend to allow the users to tweak the setting here (i.e. "unwire" it) but it is a low priority.
