Thanks for all of your ideas. The solution was to replace the generic nVidia driver with the model specific driver from nVidia. This boosted my FPS and makes any rotation smooth. I was able to take things a step further and get the hardware 3d working by editing the xorg.conf and adding the following below the video card section:
Option "Stereo" "3" Thanks! -Jon
