Was there any more to this? I agree with Paul that the first thing to do is check the format of the "mrc" file. It would be useful to see the file, and to know how it was created (i.e. by which program).
There was one problem in the CCP4 library (if memory serves, it occurred if the origin was set to non-zero) which was fixed a couple of years ago. Might you be picking up an old CCP4 library? There was a second problem with Chimera writing an incorrect machine stamp, but this was fixed by the Chimera developers again a couple of years ago. I'm happy to look into this further.
