Windows XP would be a bit extreme for me..

I think I pointed this out earlier - RHEL6 / CentOS6 / SL6 do not suffer from 
this, whereas Ubuntu and relatives seem to have the mesa/opengl problem.
RHEL6 and its derivatives run nicely on desktops and older notebooks; for 
latest hardware you might need to get updated drivers from ElRepo 
(http://elrepo.org/tiki/tiki-index.php).
