I take it to mean the XQuartz 2.8.0 doesn't distribute the library against which Coot (0.9.x) is linked by
CCP4 and CCPEM. At some stage CCP4 will drop the hammer and update to 2.8.0 and build Coot against that - at
which stage (of course) the Coot of all 2.7.x users will stop working.

Skip the 2.8.0_beta1 update. If you have already updated your XQuartz,
you can downgrade to XQuartz 2.7.11 and COOT should work again. Be
sure to log out and log back in after XQuartz updates.
