Thanks for the button Paul. Although, I had already put this code in my config
file ~/.config/Coot/config.py so that I can just press shift-N to set
everything the way I like. Unfortunately, I have to run this shortcut every
time I open a new model. Is there a way to set the default values for all new
models instead of having to run a function? Or to have a hook for loading a new
model?

I think the main issue is the very strong specular highlight of models.
Reducing the value from 1.0 to even e.g. 0.3 or so makes a huge difference. The
new diffuse and ambinent defaults are fine in my opinion and give a bit of
extra depth.
The default clipping is also too shallow when zoomed in, so I set these values:
coot.set_clipping_front(1.4)
coot.set_clipping_back(1.0)
