Hi,

Nowadays, joining to IRC is a hurdle for new contributors.
There are some alternative, modern web applications:

* Slack -- Most used for tech communities.

One con other than the 10k limit is the weird fact that you essentially need a different account for each room you join.

* Discord -- Similar to slack. It is focusing game, but support OSS too. [1]

Discord is genuinely awesome. You can do pretty much everything for free, and it handles huge servers quite well.

* Gitter -- Most integrated with Github. typing, mypy, pip use it already.

AFAIK there are two main negatives to Gitter:

- Only one "channel" per GitHub repo. Compare that to Slack or Gitter, where you can have multiple channels on one server. - Sorry, but the mobile app is largely garbage. It doesn't even handle links correctly, and it's particularly bad compared to the amazing Discord app.

I know adding communication channel is not good always.
(We couldn't keep https://discuss.python.org/)
But I think IRC is really high hurdle for young people.

How about trying one of them? (maybe, gitter?)

Regards,
