Have you tried?

I'm writing a HAL plugin in Swift but haven't gotten to the render part
yet.

I once wrote a plugin in ObjC and that worked out fine.  I was representing
a bunch of network streams as a multi-channel souncard, though, so there
was a great deal of latency.
