Hi Boyd,

In answer to your question I am intrigued to know where you found the
information from the 1851 Census!! A census with the maiden name of a woman?
Oh my!

This is unofficially called a census substitute for people over 70 years who
were applying for the Old Age Pension after the Act was passed in 1909. As
civil registration did not begin until 1864, people could not actually prove
they were over 70 to enable them to receive the pension. So after 1909 and
before 1922, when the census returns were destroyed, searches were made by
using the 1841 and 1851 census returns to prove their age.

The searches were often undertaken by the minister of the parish where they
were born and information included the name and address of applicant as well as
the names of applicant’s parents, including the maiden name of the mother and
the date of their marriage! Also included the names of any children and their
ages as given in the 1841 and 1851 census return! Not all of these records
have survived but many have and I have personally found gold in the records for
Donaghmore, Co. Tyrone.

The records are available at PRONI and National Archives of Ireland, Find My
Past and Family Search and are also available in many libraries on CD-ROM.

Hi Lesley,

First a quick but very important correction. Your great grandparents, Thomas
Booth and Jane Gilchrist, did NOT marry in Camus-juxta-Mourne church. That is
a Church of Ireland church. They married in First Strabane Presbyterian
church, as per the marriage cert. Have a closer look.
