Tunji,

You ask what type of information is in the Bishopric Estate records.
If you owned a property today and rented it out, what records would
you keep? A brief description of the property, length of the lease
(plus perhaps any special conditions), the rent, details of any
arrears and the name of the tenant. Something like that perhaps? It
was exactly the same in 1650 or 1750 or 1850. So that’s roughly what
you will find in those records.

It’s important to remember too that these documents mostly list the
farmers or townspeople who rented directly from the landowner. Many of
our ancestors were labourers or weavers or servants who didn’t rent
directly from the landowner. They rented from local farmers or other
middlemen. Many didn’t have a lease at all. They were “at will”
tenants who were free to leave without notice (or who could be evicted
without notice too). There were rarely paper tenancy records for them.

So it’s important to have some idea of what your ancestors did in
Ireland, to know how likely they are to appear in estate records.

In terms of finding your ancestors, if you know where your ancestor
lived, the estate records can be helpful because they not only confirm
the family’s presence but also tell you who was head of household and
roughly when that changed. But what they are not is a comprehensive
list of all Lees living in the area.
