Dear Len & Marion, Thank you for your replies! The only direct paper evidence I have of a location in Ireland for my Lees family is a Scottish record where Elizabeth Lees (daughter of my ancestor Oliver Lees) is listed as being born in County Tyrone around 1821. As you say Len, all Lees in County Tyrone seem to be focused around the East of the County so it seems likely she was born there. I found an Oliver Lees who was witness to a 1845 marriage between a William Ledlie and a Mary Lays or Lees, daughter of Robert Lays/Lees in Drummullen, Arboe, Cookstown on the Tyrone/Londonderry border, though I have no way of knowing if this is my guy. My Oliver was definitely living in Scotland in the 1840s and died there in 1847, so I don't know how realistic it would be for someone to travel from Edinburgh to County Tyrone for a wedding in those days? Bill Macafee mentions an Estate of John Lee and another. 13 June 1862, 1862, Leasehold interests in Drummullan [Drummullen]. Arboe, Loughinsholin, T/877/598 which will be my next step to explore.
Regarding the Derry Bishopric Estate, not sure if this is fully in the scope of this Co. Tyrone mailing list, but what I am interested in are the estate records for Tamlaght O'Crilly in County Londonderry as there is an Oliver Lees in Tamlaght O'Crilly recorded in the Grand Lodge of Ireland Masonry records in 1816 who was also recorded as being witness to a riot at Tamlaght O'Crilly Parish Church in a transcript of Magherafelt Sessions published in the Anti-Jacobin Review. This may be my ancestor. My Oliver emigrated to Scotland in the 1820s and I have a Y-DNA match with a Lees family who lived in Ahoghill parish, Co. Antrim which bordered with Tamlaght O'Crilly. Tithe applotment records and circumstantial evidence such as naming patterns, and the rare nature of the name Lees/Lee in the area also seem to point towards the Ahoghill family being related to one of the David Lees families living on the church lands of Tamlaght O'Crilly; one in Killymuck townland, the other in Gortmacrane townland in the 1820s-30s. There don't seem to be any surviving rental records. I've tried to trace some deeds for the lands but haven't had much luck pre-1847. According to each source I've found, a number of Reverends held the Killymuck lands from the See of Derry at different times. William Roulson lists some early Derry Bishopric Estate records so I guess I should start from there.
