This discussion has been fascinating, and I would like to ask this
community what I consider to be a few "practical questions" especially
for a still-working-stiff like me :-) And, full disclosure - I am
probably more amateur than most here... I sbsolutely have questions such
as "How are the Johnstons connected, given my GG-GFather Joseph Johnston
Knott is the first instance of Johnston in the Knott line?" and I'd love
to know the answer to that -- and, I'm quite certain that I will never
have full proof for the 850ish people in my tree - with probably about
half of them crowd-sourced.
1. It seems like Ancestry / MyHeritage / etc. provide a notable bonus to
people who have interest and don't have tons of time
-> I've learned tons from these online tools, and even connected
with a living relative in Ireland (whose G-G-Gma and mine were sisters)
as a result
-> While there is definitely cruft out there, there's also
seemingly gold
-> How does one capitalize on crowd-sourcing effectively without
being "on a platform" as seems recommended by "get your own local
software for your tree"?
(and, this seems a good way to give back - others can choose
if they like my info or not)
2. On MyHeritage for sure, and I think on Ancestry, "My Tree is My Tree"
so no one else can edit "my data" which I am pretty darn sure is my data
-> Family Search is certainly different, and while a very large
dataset also feels less reliable
-> That said, I received some great help from a Mormon volunteer
when seeking to clarify something
-> Is there an easy and practical way to keep data current on
multiple sites? Or is it all hand-to-hand combat?
3. DNA seems like a way to prioritize research - if the chemistry is
stronger, the likelihood of common ancestry is much higher
-> Again, seems to cry out for being part of an online platform
with my tree data
-> What other smart options are there, or is this "the thing to
do"?
4. For saving files locally, what are best practices? My choices thus
far:
-> Everything in one folder; use a naming convention that allows
searching with asterisks to easily find 'all from a place' or 'with a
name'
-> Example:
1872-02-01-ElizaKnott-birth-Corramartin-Ballinamore.png
1877-02-14-SarahKnott-WifeOfJohnKnott-DEATH-Corramartin .PNG
1882-03-07-JamesMartinKnott-Corramartin
-BAPTISM-OUTERAGH-ChurchOfIreland.PNG
5. How best to organize "partial information" for later sorting out who
is actually whom? For example:
-> Downloaded all RootsIreland (paid site) records with
"Venables"
-> Entered each name in Excel, with columns for First, Last,
Father, Mother, Birth Date, Baptism Date, Baptism Church, Marriage Date,
etc.
-> Now, the hard part of making sense of it - is there a best
practice??

While I understand the desire for purity espoused in the first article,
for someone like me it's not practical given my objectives of learning
more about where I and my family originated, and how some of us connect.
The detective in me, I guess :-)
