Those attendance records are not on-line. They are the originals and
you order them up in the main reading room. They usually take about 20
minutes to come up. You can order up to 5 sets of records at any one
time. (The staff will explain).
My index to schools doesn’t give any dates for the years covered. (I
have attached it in case anyone else is interested). I have used them
a fair bit. There aren’t many records for the period 1830 – 1870 but
after that they improve. But there are loads of gaps.
A separate set of records exist for the management of the schools.
Under the PRONI EDD reference system. They contain management
information. They can be great reading. So records of teachers, their
salaries, school inspectors reports, HR issues, teachers fiddling the
attendance records (usually to try and get an additional teacher);
teachers with a bottle of nippy sweetie under their desk. And worse.
(Teachers suddenly sacked after an “incident.” ).
In the mid 1800s many parents couldn't see the point of sending their
children to school. They felt the children would be much more useful
at home about the farm/cottage especially at harvest time. Children
might therefore turn up in the morning but be called home in the
afternoon. Not much the teacher could do really as it wasn't
obligatory for children to attend school then.
If you are planning to go to PRONI, on your first visit, take your
passport or some other photo id to get your readers ticket. (Takes 2
minutes). Pencil and paper to transcribe records. No pens.
Some say you should bring an umbrella to Ireland as well (but you
probably knew that anyway). We residents all have scales and flippers
so don’t need umbrellas but we feel it’s good advice to give to
overseas visitors. Hope you enjoy your stay here.

School attendance records are listed on the PRONI website listed by
parish and the prefix SCH/-. 4 schools in Kildress parish do have
records but sadly Dunnamore is not one of them.
