Here, here Len!

Definitely in my grandfather’s family. He came to Oz his brother to NYC, and
some siblings stayed in Ireland. While we have known for several years that
this brother existed and had traced his marriage his wife and his children in
USA, they had no concept that there could be family in Australia. Imagine
trying to find the needle in the NYC haystack of someone named Patrick
McCormack!! But we did it!

And while the journey to Oz was both long and difficult, especially in
comparison to iron with the journey to East Coast USA, there was much to gain
from a government desperate for free settlers. Where the Irish in NYC in
particular were considered the lowest of the low where work and accommodation
were concerned and faced the endless “No Irish” signs everywhere, in Australia
they were able to access land and apply their rural skills to conquer a vastly
different landscape. It was amazingly hard work but they often gathered people
from their local community in Ireland around them and pulled together! There
were big contrasts in acceptance between the two countries. I think the many
many Irish in my family thought themselves lucky as they slowly built families
and comfort around themselves.

Keep up the good work guys

Hi folks, contrary to popular belief, not all Irish emigrants were destined to
North America - the Australian colonies offered free passages from the late
1830s and it is possible that emigrant siblings could be found in both North
America and Australia
