Glad I triggered the old NZ/Aussie rivalry for you Chris!

One interesting snippet is that as the pioneers to NZ had a few more pennies
when they emigrated, they often took precious household pieces with them. When
they found the living conditions were more basic than expected, they wrapped up
their china etc and stored it safely away.. According to an antique dealer I
knew, that’s why you can get some great antiques in NZ!

Actually I’m a hybrid…I have (yes, unbelievably!) birth certificates from both
countries. Growing up in NZ and now living in Australia, I love them both…well
maybe NZ a touch more.

Cheers back from your side of the dutch (kiwi for ditch)

Ahh yes our Kiwis!

Verity your little dig at the convicts made me snort into my cuppa!

Didn’t know they demanded literacy for your lot, but that meant you didn’t get
the ones who were used to the REALLY hard work!

And might I add Ms Cheeky Kiwi, convict descendants now consider themselves
genealogical royalty in Australia. See what you missed out on over the ditch?
Not that I’m in the royalty ranks! My lot were just sometimes illiterate
farmers but they were pioneers all the same.

And yes one of my great uncles travelled across that ditch for the gold rush
and vowed he would never cross it again. So we’ve got some real Kiwi Cousins
now! We’re all in it together!

Cheers and waving across that ditch

And don’t forget about New Zealand, where some of my Ulster Irish ended up!
In the early 1840’s they were mainly traders, whalers, sealers and ex soldiers,
then like my Henrys, skipped over from Australia to follow the gold, set up
hotels and make the most of the coaching business. Free passage was initially
only offered to the literate, so numbers were small as passage was expensive.
And of course New Zealand didn’t take this undesirable convicts!

Hi folks, contrary to popular belief, not all Irish emigrants were destined to
North America - the Australian colonies offered free passages from the late
1830s and it is possible that emigrant siblings could be found in both North
America and Australia
