Hi Verity,c
My wife has a similar problem with allegiance. Her ancestors were pioneer
settlers of Christchurch yet she is Australian born. She loves cricket and
rugby (union), so avoids watching matches when our 2 countries compete.

The case of pioneers landing with all the trapings of civilization, only to
be confronted with a wild and undeveloped country, is in part a theme
featured in the film "The piano" when this prised instrument was dumped on
the wet sands of Petone beach, there being no wharf facilities at
Wellington back then.
