Dennis, I just went through this same problem on my Ercoupe. The air speed indicator read high and became worse with the windows down. I have my static line running out into the wing and incorporated into the pitot tube (one line for static and one line for pitot) so the first thing I checked was for a leak in the static line between the pitot tube and the ASI. I disconnected the static hose from the ASI and plugged the other end at the pitot tube. I attached a hand held vacuum pump to the disconnected end and checked to see if the line held vacuum. It did, so that was not the problem. Now I repeated the same test with the pitot line and it was fine too. Now that I knew the lines were good I pulled the ASI from the instrument panel and checked it by standing in front of a mirror and very gently blowing into the pitot port until the needle read about 60 mph. Then while holding this reading I sealed off the port with my tongue and watched for the needle to return to 0 mph. It did, indicating a leak in the casing of the instrument. If the ASI is good the needle will not move until you pull your tongue off the port. Just make sure to be careful when blowing into the port as the instrument can be very easily damaged by too much pressure. Only a very small amount is needed. I replaced my ASI and have not had a problem since then.
Hope this helps, Dan [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: > Hi all, we have a '58 Forney F-1 which we are doing and extended annual / > IRAN on.
