Ok! Here's my question. If you run the wing tanks dry, and fly on with
fuel in header tank only, are you doing any damage to your fuel pump?
On the first two flights, after purchasing my Coupe, I found that when
the header tank was full, fuel would gush out the top and splash onto
the Windshield. The only way to stop it was to shut off the valve from
the wing tanks and let the header drain down a little. Since that time
I've put a new cap on with the Lexan tube over the wire fuel gauge.
That seems to have stopped the fuel spewing out. The fuel pump seems to
still be functioning correctly, as the header stays full, but could I,
and the previous owner, as I assume he had the same problem, have done
any long term damage to the pump? I know I like to sit back and bitch
about some mechanics and their high handed extortion, but I'm starting
to get more upset at pilots who won't properly maintain their aircraft.
I will always believe that we should be able to do more for our Coupes
than we do, but I also believe that the days of bubble gum, bailing
wire, and saw dust, are long gone. I think I should be able to replace
a fuel line if required, but I also believe I should use the properly
rated hose.
