Hi Larry, My opinion on shutting off the fuel pump is that it will not hurt it. I turn mine off for taxi because at low rpm the engine doesn't use much fuel and the excess that goes to the left tank (in my 'coupe) will not feed to the right fast enough. So when I take a right turn fuel comes out of the vent. "CAUTION" I make it an item to check before take off!!! Remeber there should be a restrictor in the outlet of the pump. This is the fitting itself. One should have a smaller hole than the other. If everything is right in the system one should not be getting fuel coming out of anywhere. Good luck and happy flying.
