Hi Paul and everyone else who 'Coupes',
I had a very similar problem a few years ago. During my
'pre-flight,
while I was checking the gascolator for water (at the 'push to drain'
valve on the bottom of the glass sediment bowl), I got a little fuel on
my fingers. It didn't come from the flow, so upon further inspection, I
wiggled the gascolator just a slight amount to check it for tightness
and it came off in my hand. By pushing the valve open I had opened the
small crack in the back side of the fitting and allowed gas to seep out
that was not leaking until then due to the weight of the bowl assembly
holding the crack closed. Obviously I didn't go flying that day!
What if I had not noticed that tiny bit of fuel on my finger? It
could
(probably WOULD) have vibrated off during flight, started pouring fuel
onto the hot exhaust stack and BOOM, a big problem. How far will a
Coupe glide when it's on fire??????
I agree with you, I think everyone should be aware of this and
give
that little fitting a second and third GOOD LOOK! Mine has the braces
on there and the old fitting was replaced with the new one. (Was it
brass to iron or iron to brass, I don't recall without checking the AD
again or looking at my plane. I 'think' it oringinally had brass and the
AD was to change it to iron, but it could be the other way around.
Good Safety Point Paul, thanks for the reminder!!!!
