The place you later find oil often has only a slight
correlation with where the oil is coming from. Two common
areas are from the vacuum pump seal (if you have a pump) and
from crankcase through-bolts and cylinder hold-down bolts.
At the front of the engine, high pressure oil is directed to
the main bearing. The only seal preventing this oil from
exiting the crankcase halves is the silk thread and whatever
sealant the builder has used. A thread is supposed to be
wrapped around the area where the front through-bolts pass,
but it is sometimes breached by the hot high temperature
oil.

I agree with the methods described by others to find oil. In
my case, just a thorough solvent cleaning and compressed-air
drying, followed by 1/2 hour of flight, uncowling, and a
bright light showed the bolt threads and nuts to be wet with
oil. I then made my repair and repeated the procedure
because I didn't want to loosen any more bolts than I had to
and the sealing took a lot of labor. It took several rounds
of this procedure before we were done. If through-bolt leaks
are your problem, I'll be glad to relate how I stopped the
leaks.
