Robert, My 1965 Alon is Serial # 11. It does not have the latch in the top middle. It has a spike on the canopy that slides into a piece of metal with a hole in it, and which is affixed to the center of the windscreen. Sometime after SN 11 (maybe as early as SN 18) this was changed, and the frame around the canopy was strengthened. I don't know when the top latch was introduced, but probably at the same time. You might try to find an early model Alon and look at the top middle latch. Perhaps it could be reproduced if you can't find or adapt a latch. My canopy does not gap at all when closed.
