Brian,

The Ercoupe service manual describes the rigging procedure for the flight
controls.

I too had the nosewheel problem. When I bought my 415C I noticed the side
play in the nosewheel bearing and I replaced it with a new one from
univair. The bearing fit snugly on the axle, and snugly inside the 2
wheel halves. But when I lowered it down onto the nosewheel I had the
exact same play.

The problem here is that Erco did not used a tapered roller bearing, as
other manufacturers do. The tapered bearing allows you to tighten up the
nut against the bearings and remove all side play. Erco used a ball
bearing, and the bearing allows some side play- you cant get away from
it.

As for the pulling and slop in your nose steering, you probably have wear
in you scissor and steering collar connections, and in the scissor bolts
where they attach to the nose gear. Mine had a little play in all places,
and it added up to a lot of pull and shimmy. I tightened up the hardware
as best I could (bearing in mind the worn-out scissor parts) and it did
away with the shimmy and most of the pull.

Are both of your main tires exactly the same pressure? If not that will
cause a pull also. I always knew when one tire was getting low because it
would drag to that side at low speed taxiing. When I aired up the tire
the pull went away.

hope this answers some of your question.
