VAL 760 is probably a good way to go. It can be had with an inbuilt intercom, or you can supplement with a basic panel-mount intercom (get what's on sale) from any number of builders. http://www.valavionics.com is their site. Don't buy it from there, as it's a good 100 bucks cheaper from retailers like Aircraft Spruce. The pre-wired harness probably pays for itself. Two minuses on the VAL: 1) without the supplemental backup power option, it 'forgets' the last channels that were in the flip flop. You have to set them every time you fire up. 2) No nav frequency reception, so you can't even hear what's going on over the VOR frequencies. Icom has a nice COM unit as well, but it isn't TSO'd and so requires 337 approval. Unless you're doing IFR work, or lack any GPS capability, I think that a VOR is passe. Personally I can't justify the expense, weight, and panel space for it.
