Hi, All! I thought all you coupers in the US might be interested to hear about a new category that has just been started in Canada regarding aircraft maintenance. Now older planes such as 'Coupes, Taylorcraft, Cubs, etc. can be completely maintained by the owner. This includes engine rebuilds, air-frame maintenance, and any change or modification that takes your fancy. The down side can be sloppy workmanship, and reduced value of the plane for resale. This category is called O.M. (Owner Maintenance). The owner must still do an annual inspection and sign it off himself. This now makes it legal to buy bearings for your mags from a bearing shop for $6 or have your muffler welded up by a good welder for a fraction of the usual "certified" cost. One thing to think about before going on O.M. is that once you're in this category, it is very hard to reverse the process. Engine, prop, and airframe are marked with an "X" indicating it is no longer under the eyes of a licenced AME. This whole process should reduce the cost of maintaining some of these old planes, and I do believe that since the owner is flying behind his own work he will be very careful. Now I can get my plane off the drawing board and into the air. Have you ever seen an Ercoupe Biplane? What a classic! The performance with 180 HP should most likely put the Pitt Special in the shadows. Watch for pictures!
