Peter,

I know that in the Alons, at least, that is a very common place to have a
crack. Both my exhaust stacks have been welded, so take heart! It's
nothing you did.

Because I have two welded stacks, I also am concerned about CO in the
cockpit. It can be very difficult to detect small leaks in a weld. So,
rather than fret about it, I bought an AIM 935 low-level electronic CO
detector. AvFlash has an excellent article on CO detectors as
http://www.avweb.com/articles/codetect.html. You should read this; if
you're using one of the orange-spot detectors like a Dead Stop, it's
probably not doing much.

First of all, they're pretty much useless unless you change them every 30
days -- NOT the 90 days the manufacturer claims. They're also incredibly
sensitive to cleansers, sunlight, and a bunch of other stuff. Plus, if
you
change them every 30 days, the AIM 935 is actually cheaper to use. The
AIM
lasts for three years and costs about $80 shipped. I believe that the
website to order one online is included in the article; I ordered mine via
the web and am very happy with it. The only gotcha is that it's a little
big. I attached mine to the carpet on the floor with Velcro so that I can
detach it and take it along in rentals as well.

Hope it helps!
