They're cheaper, quieter, smoother, and somewhat safer. They also tolerate being outdoors very poorly. I don't think I'd eliminate a pre-813 plane just because it was earlier. But I'd sure try and get educated on what the differences were (as you're doing) and make sure that the rarer pieces like the gear and tanks were in A1 shape and apt to last many more years.
