Ok John you win.
But still you have no multiplier. You have only one cable and one weight.
The cable can go thur 10 pulleys. You still have ONLY one cable and one
weight. Because the cable goes up and down make no difference. Now hang
two
175# weights you get 350#. Not 10 x 175# = 1750#
With 10 pulleys the 175# may be a few grams light with pulley friction.
Then again is may not.
If one needs 350 # one could use a ratios of 2 to 1 installed in the
system. But then you have something to cause a multiplier.
John I really want you to be right. I understand what you are
trying
to see. It just not the way it is. The hole point of talks like this is
only
to help other understand not to get in a huff. I don't care if I am wrong
or
right. I have been wrong many times. But when I am wrong I want to see and
understand why. I hope that is why we all are here.

OK, try this. Connect one end of a cable to the floor. Put a spring
balance
between the end of the cable and the hook on the floor. Hang a pulley
from
the ceiling, also by a spring balance. Loop the cable over the pulley and
hang a 175# weight on it. What will the tensiometer read on the cable?
What
will the 2 scales read?
Answer: The tensiometer will read 175#. The scale between the floor and
the
cable will read 175# and the one on the ceiling will read 350#
QED.
John
