My confusion arises from thinking technical stuff comes through only on
this list, whereas in reality there's as much again on the "social"
list. One recent post concerned main spar corrosion and went into a
little detail on the symptoms and causes.

When we got #4019 stripped out I found what I thought was inter-granular
corrosion on the spar cap front face immediately in front of the four
fuselage-to-main-spar bolt holes. It looked like exfoliation and we
guessed it may have started as a result of dissimilar metal interaction
between the steel bolts and the spar cap.

A thorough visual inspection of the holes however showed them to be
round, shiny and corrosion free. We linished the exfoliation off the
front of the cap and ran into clean metal at a depth of about 10 thou.
We developed the area but could find no more damage so we acid washed
it, hit it with alordyne and called it good. Close inspection showed
that a router of some description had been used to diminish the depth of
the top web forward face inboard of the fuselage attachment points and
the resultant rough finish, together with vibration jitter from
fuselage/spar web interference, had encouraged corrosion to start.

This is, as always, just my humble opinion and I thought I would ask
whether anyone on this board had experienced a similar problem. At
first glance we thought we had a scrap center-section, on reflection and
with a minor amount of effort we found we didn't.
