Well Bob, This will probably get me in a flame war but I think George Frebert has misinterpreted the FAR. It is Part 45 - IDENTIFICATION AND REGISTRATION MARKING if you are interested look at http://www.airweb.faa.gov/Regulatory_and_Guidance_Library/rgFAR.nsf/Curren tFARSubPartFrame?OpenFrameSet What the FAR's require is: "Sec. 45.23 Display of marks; general. (a) Each operator of an aircraft shall display on that aircraft marks consisting of the Roman capital letter "N" (denoting United States registration) followed by the registration number of the aircraft. Each suffix letter used in the marks displayed must also be a Roman capital letter." Now this does not mean (to me) a Roman typeface as George claims, it refers to the Roman (as opposed to Cyrillic or Arabic) alphabet. You need to use capital letters and the Western (i.e. Roman) alphabet. Almost no one uses a serifed font for N number, nor do I think the FAR's require it. But no fair putting your N number in Arabic, Greek or Japanese.
