           Steve.
Something I've used to keep water and dirt out of my tanks, is a
siphon line. Another couper told me how to make one. Get some 1/4 or
5/16" aluminum tubing,[about four feet] and some clear vinyl tubing to
fit over it.[about four feet]. Cut the tubing in half, or make one piece
10" longer than the other. Take the shorter piece and bend it to a
gentle "S" shape to fit into the corners of the nose tank. Make sure the
bend is adjusted so you can get it in and out of the tank and it reaches
to the outer edges of the bottom of the tank. File the end so that the
opening is parallel to the bottom of the tank. Now take the longer piece
and do the same thing for the wing tanks, again being very careful it
will reach the innermost corners of the tanks. File end to match the
bottom. Now join the two tubes together by their unfiled ends with the
clear tubing. Now you can siphon fuel into a container by sucking on the
tube. The clear tubing allows you to see when the fuel is getting close
to the other end so you don't drink any!!! Lower the free end into a
good sized container and proceed to vacuum the bottom of the tanks. Blow
out the line, then reverse the line for the other type of tank. The
first [and second] time I used this I was shocked at what I got out of
the tanks! Water, paint chips, dirt, bug parts and whole bugs! Even when
I covered all the gas caps I regularly got water from both wing and nose
tanks. This is what has sent many coupes into the tullies. This simple
device can be carried in the plane and may save your life. [Warning,
don't let your kids see how easy it is to siphon gas, as if they didn't
know]
