Bob, Yes there are some interesting comments......Here are quotes from: Ercoupe, A Touch of Class.
Also see page 255 of "Ercoupe, a Touch of Class.... reprint of a letter from Bob Sanders on the proper proceedure for landing in a crosswind, etc...P-4, Sanders Aviation Inc., World Wide Distributors for Ercoupes, June 2, 1949. Ercoupes and Cross Winds.-----"one wing will tend to rise, particularly if you have landed in a gust or for some other reason are not at minmium speed. The proper proceedure to extricate yourself from this predicament is a sharp application of the brakes. Application of the brakes will bring your nose down, will bring your high wing down, and will slow the airplane at the same time. These three effects all combine to give you complete control of the airplane in a few feet of travel." end of quote... Here, I might add, one should be careful not to slide the wheels by excessive brake pressure ; which can be done when there is just a little weight on the wheels.. and from page 231, an earlier letter from Bob Sanders titled: Low and Slow In The Ercoupe---June 30, 1948.....".When making a cross wind landing, land in a "crab" on the main gear. Be sure it is a minimum speed landing." --------------" a generous application of brakes will right wings if one starts to rise -- the result of a fast landing." On Page 303,is a Copy of Forney F1 Instruction Manual, Landing, paragraph 10.--- "After landing, the brakes may be used as desired. In an emergency they may be applied before the landing is made, but this proceedure is not recommended as standard practice on account of the tire wear involved" Para 11.; "Slippery terraine or loose gravel can bring skidding during the landing run. If a tendency to skid and turn sort of sideways is noticeable, momentarily release the brake and it will straighten out and roll in the direction it was originally going. It's the same in a car. If the rear end starts skidding around to the right, turn right and immediately attempt to stop the skid." Hope this helps educate the group.....
