Dear Couper Friends: I have some questions about aileron weights on 415's. Do you all have them on or have some of you had them removed? A number of year ago when my father had N2749H annualed they removed the wt.'s. Why were they removed? And why were they there in the first place? Was there a AD to have them taken off? We really can't tell any difference in the air, but we're wondering if their absence can cause some of our nose wheel shimmy? (because of the linkage?)
Also we have metal wings. They have the concave under the leading edge. They have flush rivets and when they had them metalized at Univar there was no entry for increased wt. and no new wt. and bal. done. Someone wrote that they increased the wt. by 40lb. I also have been told (I can't remember by who) that there was no increase in wt. because doped fabric weighs the same as aluminum. How much wt. is added to a coupe that's painted? And do you than have to have a new wt. & bal.done? Ours is painted only on nose and trim (Bonanza type trim) I believe the metal prop which most of us have adds 20 lb. and changes the datum some. Our coupe will break but not stall with metal and will not break with wood.(we still have the org. wood prop). Just a interesting note. Our neighbor bought our coupe new on Nov. 11 1946 he paid $3100 for it.(they came down $200 from June to Nov. as my dad paid $3300 for N99136 in June 1946) and when he and my dad bought metal props in 1947 they paid $120.00 a peice for them.(it's the same prop on 2749H right now) We paid a little over $300 to have it repitched to a power or climb prop). I will appreciate any comments. Jim Phelps Ercoupe 415-C N2749H
