You're right Susan, this is good advice.  Also, a field approval (337) is 
another possibility.

I have several for my J3, from non-stock piston pins to a modified baggage
area, and they are easy to get.

One nice thing about the Cub Club is that they keep, on file, several 
example 337 forms that have been approved by the FAA for someone's plane
for all kinds of modifications.  They send you a copy for $5 if you want
it, and your mechanic can use it to show the FAA that it has already been 
approved for someone else and they normally approve it for you, too.  

It would be pretty slick if the Ercoupe owners had something like this.
I'm sure there are all kinds of neat-o mods that have been done 
(and approved).

Our M10 has a big cut-out in the header tank for the radios to fit.  This 
was done on a 337 and not an STC.
