I would have to disagree with you there. Having attended 4 or 5 different flight schools over the years, I would say that by and large they are only glossing over old-time navigation. The students may have some knowledge but that doesn't mean they can actually do the flying. Many instructors allow students to use handheld GPS, which is really surprising to me. I do not think that the pre-planned solution to a Nav equipment failure is to land. That can be fine but IF there is not a place to land then you are stuck. You should not be bored on a night flight since it is even more important at night to be keeping track of where you are on the map and in reference to things outside the window, if possible. I do not have to look for ways to entertain myself while flying. It should be paid more attention than that, especially for a commercial licensee.
