George, it doesn't really work that way. "Experimental" is divided into
several categories, and our
Coupes don't qualify for any of them.
"Experimental - Homebuilt" means the builder has manufactured at
least 51% of the airplane
him/herself.
"Experimental - Exhibition" means a plane that is restricted to
exhibition type of operations,
such as airshows, to show itself to other people. Foreign warbirds are
put
into this category.
"Experimental - Flight Test" means the owner has made a major
modification to a certificated
aircraft that is not covered by an STC, and the owner is in the process of
proving to the FAA that this
modification will not render the aircraft unairworthy. The aircraft is
restricted to flying only
within a certain test area for a certain number of hours with a very
extensive documentation system to
prove the modification. This is very expensive (what ever happened to
certifying the Franklin and
Suburu engines for Ercoupes?) and the cost is reclaimed by selling STC's
to
other owners. After the
Feds are satisfied, the aircraft can then be returned to normal status.
