I have attempted this myself. My borrowed helmets were from a company
called Comtronics. These helmets are popular with the self-built
aviation persons. Unfortunately they proved too bulky for use in the
Ercoupe plane. Even with the side windows down the helmets would
occasionally hit on the window frames around the sides. This was most
unfortunate because they were well made and I did not realize they were
even on my head by the time I got to the runup area. After looking at
some motorcycle helmets I concluded that no helmet worth having would
fit on my head in the cockpit of the Ercoupe. If there was more room
then I would probably wear one. If one is concerned with style then it
is necessary to wear complete flying attire as the helmet just doesn't
look right when you are wearing short pants or tea shirt. My
instructor forbid such clothing anyway. Vishni
