To turn the ignition off and on again while shutting down is one method to
check for the ground wires to be properly attached. A check of the
integrity
of the magneto ground wire circuitry is also one of the reasons why during
a
runup the pilot should watch for a drop in rpm when turning the magnetos
off
and back on again one after the other. It is essential to get a noticeable
drop when turning of either magneto, not just one. If there is no drop
observed I would, besides a problem in the respective magneto itself,
suspect a faulty ground circuit. Furthermore, if I am not able to
ascertain
that one magneto can be taken off the circuit properly, I would have no
means to make sure that the other magneto is functioning at all.

There's one procedure I haven't heard anyone mention so far. I first
saw this as part of the engine shutdown checklist (checklist!!) for our
T-41's. First, the engine is idled at about 1000 RPM. After the
avionics and electronics are turned off, the ignition (mag) switch is
MOMENTARILY turned to "OFF". If the engine tries to die, it can be
assumed that the switch and grounding wire are functioning. The engine
is then shut down normally with the mixture control. Obviously, this
will only work with carbs equipped with mixture controls which will go
to full fuel cutoff. This seems like a cheap and easy check on switch
and grounding wire integrity and should make propping the engine just a
little safer.
